It's helpful to first understand what you're dealing with. Bed bugs are small, reddy brown insects that look somewhat similar to roaches and ticks. Bed bugs survive by feeding on the blood of living creatures, and often live in mattresses because sleeping humans and pets are perfect for bed bugs to feed on. Bed bug bites are painless at the time of feeding! However they often leave itchy bumps that look similar to mosquito bites afterwards.
You can often tell that you have bed bugs by the appearance of dried excrement on mattresses and upholstered furniture. This excrement is dark in color and looks spotty. You'll want to vacuum all areas where bed bugs are suspected and launder all items in the area. However, in order to totally get rid of bed bugs, you'll need to do more than vacuuming.
